The Hobart Premiere of HAIRSPRAY
Welcome to the 60s and to this wonderful, hilarious and heartfelt musical about Baltimore teenager Tracy Turnblad - a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart.Tracy has only one passion - to dance to the 'new sounds' of the early 60s and sets her sights high, landing a spot on the hippest dance show on TV, The Corny Collins Show. Along the way she attracts the attention of teen idol Link Larkin and befriends the African American kids at her school who teach her their cool dance moves. Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity, but Tracy has even bigger plans... With her mother Edna and best friend Penny by her side, Tracy leads a protest march to try and stop racial inequality. Featuring the feel good songs You Can't Stop the Beat, Good Morning Baltimore and Welcome to the 60's, you will fall for this hilarious musical with a heart as big as a beehive! The role of the lovable, dynamic Tracy Turnblad is shared by Bonnie Cashion, Emily Braithwaite and Gemma Direen, all students from the Musical Theatre Crew. The show also stars David Gilkes as Tracy's mum Edna Turnblad, Jeff Michel as wacky Wilbur Turnblad, Mandy Lowrie as the vicious vixen Velma Von Tussle, Leiz Moore as Prudy Pingleton, Peter West as Mr Pinky and Mr Spritzer, and Carmen Falk as Motormouth Maybelle. Sam Dean and Joel Wheeler share the role of teen idol Link Larkin, with Nik Berechree and James Bourke sharing the role of TV Host, Corny Collins. The senior ensemble of the Musical Theatre Crew and guest actors complete the talented cast. Join Tracy as she welcomes her mum to the 60s, wins the heart of TV's hottest teen idol and overcomes racial inequality - all part of an everyday teenager's dreams!
