Allegri Ensemble presents

On 11 November 1918, the Armistice was signed, signaling the end of four years of global war, and the loss of up to 19 million men, women and civilians, including 62,000 Australians. Allegri Ensemble commemorates the Centenary of the end of the Great War with our next concert, Remembrance.

Choral music of heroism, loss and hope will be interspersed with readings from war poets, diarists and other contemporary sources, including the complete text of Laurence Binyon’s ‘For the Fallen’ and accounts from women in the war. These will be presented by renowned Hobart actor and director, Robert Jarman.

Directed by Andrew Bainbridge, the choir will be joined by sopranos Helen Thomson and Madeleine Dyer in the semi-‐chorus of Gregorio Allegri’s famous Miserere, sung in English, in the version made famous by the Choir of King’s College Cambridge. We also welcome pianist Karen Smithies as accompanist in works by Vaughan Williams, Handel and Mozart.

The centerpiece of the program is the Requiem by Herbert Howells. Written in 1932, but not published until 1980, this a cappella work for double choir is a very personal statement on the part of the composer. In six short movements, it takes texts from the Requiem mass, the book of Psalms, and the Anglican funeral liturgy.

The program includes:

For the Fallen – Douglas Guest
Lux aeterna – Edward Elgar, arr. John Cameron (a choral setting of ‘Nimrod’ from the Enigma Variations)
Miserere – Gregorio Allegri
Requiem –Herbert Howells
Lacrimosa (from the ‘Requiem’) – W A Mozart
Their bodies are buried in peace (from ‘The Ways of Zion do Mourn’) – G F Handel
Dirge for Two Veterans (from ‘Dona nobis pacem’) – R. Vaughan Williams
